Castro Marim
The elegant silhouette of the flamingos.
The gold of soft sand, the turquoise of warm waters. The vast expanses of mountain range covered by the color of wildflowers.
On the right bank of the Guadiana, the village of Castro Marim is the scene of numerous remains that prove its occupation since ancient times.
Around the castle, built by D. Afonso III, one can contemplate an immense landscape of traditional salt pans. Castro Marim’s connection to saline activity has been going on for a long time, making it almost impossible to determine the precise date of its beginning.
Visiting the traditional salt pans is an excellent opportunity to discover the traditional knowledge used for centuries in the extraction of salt, in a perfect symbiosis between the work of man and the will of nature.
Visitors can still find those who, at their doorstep, make the detailed and delicate bobbin lace to decorate table cloths. It is still possible to get to know the faces of men who, with their wise hands, weave baskets with straw and cane, reed and palm leaves and watch them in the exercise of their craft.
All of these heritage sites are combined with the natural landscape of the municipality of Castro Marim, a territory with countless charms to discover that dazzle all those who visit it. The serene landscape of the banks of the Guadiana, where there are orchards and vegetable gardens. This is a municipality that extends from the sea to the interior, with a river as a border.
