Alcoutim
The blue of the river framed by the fresh green of the riverside vegetation, the fertile orchards and the vegetable gardens.
The dark ocher of the mountains round as pebbles, to which rockrose, holm oak and some olive trees give light strokes of color.
The houses with shale walls, or with the white of lime, of villages lost among mountain ranges. Contrasts of Alcoutim and its county, in the middle of winter, the pale pink of thousands of almond trees in bloom, the wide spaces where nature and tranquility are found to enjoy the heap of wild flowers or the birds that chirp in the tree branches.
Alcoutim presents itself as a destination for those fleeing the cosmopolitan rush. It is recognized for its embroidery, wool carpets in the style of Arraiolos and ceramics. It has several archaeological remains, namely Roman and Islamic Umayyad, Almorávida and Almoáda.
The name Alcoutim comes from the Arabic القطامي (Al-Qutami), which means peregrine falcon – the largest in Portugal and the fastest in the world.
